Born March 1891 in Mandalay; daughter of U Maung Maung Htin, Royal Herald, and Daw Khin Phwa, maid of honour in the Burmese court; trained as a musician and dancer under the patronage of the Sawbwa of Hsipaw, Sir Saw Hke; was later awarded the title “Thiri Okka Wadi” and other honours; left the court of the Sawbwa of Hsipaw, 1928; served as music instructor, State Polytechnic, before the war; served as Instructor, Music and Cultural Arts, Teachers’ Training College, Rangoon, 1953-58; appointed Assistant Research Officer, Burma Historical Commission (music division) from November 8, 1960 to date; awarded the title “Alinga Kyawswa” 1952; conferred the degree B.A. (Honoris Causa) by the University of Rangoon, 1954; served as President, Burmese Cultural Council, 1948-52. Married Yagan U Tin, Instructor, School of Fine Arts, Directorate of Culture, Rangoon.
