U Yaw (Zeya)
Born July 1900; Government High School, Prome; served as sub-editor, Dagon Magazine 1920; later became editor; resigned and published Zeya Thadinza (The Victory) Weekly, 1925; also editor, London Art Magazine, British Burma Magazine and Du Wun Journal, 1926-29; scenario writer, London Art Films; joined Government service as translator and sub-editor. Headmen's Gazette, 1931-40; reviser, Bureau of Literature and Libraries, 1942-45 during the Japanese occupation. Translator, Press and Publicity Department, Allied Military Administration, 1945; Deputy Director of Information, 1947; Director, 1948-55; member, Burma Historical Commission; Burma Research Society; Union of Burma Children's Welfare Council; Burma Translation Society; Burma Writers' Association: Chairman, International News Board. Publications: novels, short stories; books on Burma, Japan, Thailand and India; translations of Japanese Tales and Legends, and Van Loon's Story of Mankind (Burmese); awarded the title Wunna Kyaw Htin, 1950; Thiri Pyanchi, January 1955. Leader, Burmese Cultural Mission, People's Republic of China, July 1959. Married Daw May Yi, daughter of Alinga Kyawswa Thakin Kodaw Hmaing, GOM of Burmese politics. Five children.
