U Pe Thein (Shwe-U-Daung)
Born October 24, 1889 in Mandalay; son of U Eya, clerk in the Burmese Royal Court, and Daw Shwe, a Royal Reader in the Court of His Majesty King Thibaw; educated in the Dekkhinawun monastery, Mandalay; matriculated from Kelly High School, Mandalay, (Calcutta University Entrance Examination) 1908; served as teacher in the A.B.M. High School, Buddhist High School, Mandalay; also served as a clerk in government offices in Shwebo till 1914; began career as a writer 1915; first publication "Yangyi Aung" a novel in Burmese; “Yatanabon” a translation from East Lynne (by Mrs. Henry wood), 1916; joined Sun Press as magazine editor, February 1, 1917; became well known as "Shwe-U-Daung" author; “Ynpanandi”; a translation from Sir A. Rider Haggard's "She" 1917; also created detective Maung San Sha in his mystery novels in 1917: resigned from the Sun Press, August 1920; taught at a private school in Kani village, Katha district, 1922-24; served as Secretary, New Burma Press 1926 for a short time; free lance journalist and author till 1936; editor, Sun Press 1936-42; after the war joined Ludu newspaper, Mandalay, as Chief Editor 1945-53; attended Pacific Regions Peace Conference, Peking 1952, Married.
