Rawang

Description: Rawang are the ethnic kachin group lives near putao and chinese tibetan borders.

Rawang are Tibeto-Burman who lives near Putao and Chinese-Tibetan borders. They speak Kachin in the related Nung dialect. According to Kachin legend, the Nung-Rawangs were the first of six brothers from whom the main Kachin families are descended. Until today, Rawangs still live in some of the most remote valleys and mountains in the whole of Burma, where a few outsiders have ever visited. Since the days of the British, reportes have surfaced of 'pygmy tribes' in this area, but this no doubt refers to related sub-groups of the Nung-Rawang, who are often small in satuture. A few Tibetan villages still exist on the edges of Nung-Rawang territory, testifying to the Tibeto-Burma origins of many of Burma's different peoples.
